The Economics of Double Edge Safety Razor Shaving

Shaving is a part of every man’s daily life.  I don’t care if you can grow the full Santa in a week or if you have hair on just your mustache and chin that I could count with my two hands,  you need to shave to look ultra groomed at all times.  Now you may think that all those stubbly movie stars and athletes must have the chicks in droves but there are studies that clean shaven men have more attention from the ladies and better job prospects so you better love your razor.

So now that you know you have to shave, the question is what is the best way to shave and the most economical way to shave.  Different razor systems in Metro Manila have different prices.  But seriously, no matter if you like straight edge razors, double edge safety razors or cartridge razors you really should be using a shave brush and soap or cream.  The benefits are of absolutely levels beyond that of the canned stuff.

I made things easy by surveying the cost of razors, cartridges and disposable razors in Metro Manila last June 2013.

First things first, the initial cost

The economics: Double-edge shaving does have a higher initial investment but far less in the long run, and you get a really nice shave too.

The real savings come when you have to change the blade.  True you buy in the Double Edge Razor blades in bulk or you can get a Gillette Rubie pack from Mercury Drugstore (Php 55 for 5 or 5.50 each) or Dorco blades from Hortaleza or HBC (about PhP5) but look at what it would cost as pictured above 7.8 pesos each.  The savings are massive especially if you decide to compute how much shaving will cost you over the years simply by looking at the tables above.

And that is not taking into account that shaving actually becomes far more pleasurable with the Double Edge Shaving experience and is actually better for Pinoys with curlier beards.  Also this means less plastic disposable razors end up in our already choking landfills.  Thin razor blades break up far quicker than any plastic.

I’ve done the math for you, so now you decide.  Done deciding?  Look at our top sellers below
